The Power of Discipline: The Soul

Hello all,

The last time I spoke about the power of disciplining your spirit man and using the analog of how a phone works, I explained how you need to charge your spirit man up to serve God wholeheartedly and how this takes a lot of discipline. It is also important to realize that man is a triune being “Let us make man in our image” Genesis 1:26. This image is reflected through God the father, God the son and God the holy spirit.

Today, I would be talking about the importance of disciplining our souls to please God. It is important to realize that God wants us to be used as vessels to serve Him and worship Him all the days of our lives. In 2Timothy 2:21 which says “Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work”. For us to be a clean vessel, we have to be disciplined. It is important to note that our souls are extremely powerful and controls our motivation. Thus disciplining your soul is essential to becoming a better Christian and serving Him wholeheartedly.

The soul is synonymous to the software of our being. Our soul is the part of our being that has to do with our emotions, will and character. The soul shapes our personality as individuals and makes us unique. In order words, no two human beings have the same soul. It is important to note that man is a living soul. Genesis 2:7, the Bible says that the “Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul.”

The soul is where fleshly lust, desires and appetites arise. This is evident from the book of 1st Peter 2 vs. 11 which says that we should abstain from sinful desires that war against the soul”. Thus the need to always discipline our soul is essential. To do this, we always have to be attuned to our conscience and listen to the voice of God whenever we need to seek him. Communicating with God at all times is also essential to discipline our souls and, of course, we cannot forget the power of reading and meditating on His word! You are going to desire whatever you spend time on. Push past your feelings. Don’t allow that inner fire fade. Nourish your inner life, your soul! The more you tend the inner fire, the more joy and peace you will have to face life. Spend time with God daily, then get quiet and let Him talk to you. Build that time, it is just so precious.

The next time I shall be talking about the power of disciplining our bodies!

Till we meet again,

Demi Atilade
