One of my blog readers asked me the difference between these two some weeks back, and I’ve decided to address it in this post. When true spirituality is confused with morality, we gradually fall, and I think a majority of us, confuse these two. It is really important we know the difference and not get fooled with evil schemes.
Morality has to do with your outward body; everyone sees it and Spirituality, your inner man. “I am not killing, I am not stealing, I respect people, work hard and I am well educated. I am a highly moral person, and don’t let anyone dare to tell me that I am not a morally good person.” But what goals and aspirations do the person have inside? “I want to be rich. I want power. I am proud of my achievements.” These are self-serving prideful things that manifest inwardly and are not seen by others and sometimes even by self.
Being moral is doing things by the law, doing things that are right and novel, basically just living day to day, living right and not hurting people.
Being spiritual is living by the word of God, believing in a spirit being, in this case, Jesus Christ. Believing God is The Savior and doing the things that God has asked us to do
Spirituality is when you search for things that are going to change your life. Events and outward things don’t change your life, but it’s what’s inside you, what’s inside your thoughts and heart that changes your life and creates its form.
Being moral means that you are living to the best of your abilities while being spiritual, means that you’re living according to the word of God via the help of the Holy Spirit who constantly guides your path and you have a relationship with Jesus. You’re living life with His grace, not just based on human understanding. Yes, there’s an element of morality in spirituality. In essence, morality is a subset of spirituality. In life, the more you grow, using your human understanding, you can’t see anything wrong with people but by the spirit of God you know not all things are expedient. The word of God has already told us that without holiness no one can see God and our holiness is not by human efforts but a function of faith, by walking with Him. Good deeds are different from holiness and righteousness.
Spirituality also comes with a spirit of discernment, so that things that are not clear becomes clear. With the human mind, you won’t be able to find a solution. The spirit of God in you reveals things to you and insight to do things better than anyone else will do.
A murderer who gives His life to Christ is in a better position than someone who just lives a moral life. And that’s the sad truth. So we should all strive to be spiritual not just moral
Ephesians 2:14-18 NLT
14 For Christ himself has brought peace to us. He united Jews and Gentiles into one people when, in his own body on the cross, he broke down the wall of hostility that separated us. 15 He did this by ending the system of law with its commandments and regulations. He made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one new people from the two groups. 16 Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death.
17 He brought this Good News of peace to you Gentiles who were far away from him, and peace to the Jews who were near. 18 Now all of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us.
There was hostility within darkness and those who thought they would make heaven because of their good works but once Christ death on the cross, everyone was treated as equal. No matter how good you thought you were before accepting Christ (morality) or how evil you were, Christ brings us all to equality (spirituality). 2 Corinthians 5:17 says old things have passed away (meaning good and evil deeds) and all things (meaning good and evil things) have become new (equality)
This is the reason why good deeds merely don’t save you. The reason we know the difference between right and wrong is because God has designed us in His image. He has set the standards before the creation of time. The fruit of being moral is spirituality, so why settle for less? We should all aim for an excellent spirit.
